Festivals are very important events for Cape Verdeans and are celebrated with the broad participation of the inhabitants.
In Santa María, Sal Island, the “Carnival Party” takes place, inspired by Brazilian carnival festivals and customs mixed with Portuguese flavors. It takes place every year in February: Carnival Tuesdays. The carnival is characterized by the classic parade in the city streets with lots of music, dances, rhythms, smiles, and joy.
While, in mid-September, the “Music Festival” takes place, always in Santa María, an event that has become a strong tourist attraction since the quality of the local artists participating is of the highest level. Many people, from the nearby islands, move to Santa Maria to participate in the festival, camping on the large and cozy beach where the party is celebrated. Food and drink are a fundamental part of the event, the kitchen has clear influences from West Africa. The festival lasts until night and visitors can enjoy the wonderful soul of the festival and the cozy atmosphere of a campfire on the beach.
